Barbara A. Galpin '68 Greater Good Scholarship

Established by Barbara A. Galpin ’68 to support dedicated students who are focused on enriching the campus, local community or both, through volunteerism. Ms. Galpin is an avid traveler who has spent years visiting under developed countries to provide financial support to educational institutions. She created this scholarship with the mantra that it is important to “pay it forward”. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.

Selection Criteria

  • awarded to an entering freshman student in good academic standing at SUNY Cortland
  • must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average
  • demonstrated leadership and community service through the admissions application
  • enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)
  • student must have at least one full academic year remaining at the start of the fall semester of award year
  • has demonstrated financial need per FAFSA

Preference

Primary consideration given to students who have achieved a status listed below:

  • Eagle Scout
  • Gold Award
  • Class President or Vice President
  • President, Vice President, or officers of other clubs/organizations

Secondary consideration given to students who are/were involved in community service activities or have participated in an active leadership role involving their school and/or surrounding community:

  • Significant volunteer activities
  • Other class officers in clubs/organizations

Renewal Information

  • must be a matriculated student at SUNY Cortland
  • must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average
  • must participate in the Institute for Civic Engagement’s Action Team
  • must complete a minimum of 12 credit-hours of service learning courses.
  • must complete at least 30 hours of co-curricular service each academic year (totaling 120 by senior year).
  • when the recipient completes the program they may submit a portfolio that will include written reflections on their service experiences and service-related events.
