BorgWarner Morse TEC Scholarship for Community Service Volunteers
Established by BorgWarner Morse TEC to benefit student volunteers who have helped advance a community service organization’s philanthropic mission. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.
Selection Criteria
- awarded to matriculated continuing sophomore, junior or senior level student in good academic standing at SUNY Cortland
- has a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average
- has a good social standing (good social standing is defined as not having a sanction higher than a reprimand for a minimum of two semesters prior to the date of the application)
- enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)
- student must have at least one full academic year remaining at the start of the fall semester of award year
Preference
- given to family members of BorgWarner Morse TEC employees living in central and southern NY including Binghamton, Cortland, Elmira, Ithaca, Penn Yan, Syracuse, Watkins Glen and Waverly
- is given to students who have volunteered at local community service organizations like but not limited to Cortland YWCA, YMCA Franziska Rackers Center or organizations serving youth or senior age groups which have a non religious social impact
Requirements
Three letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with the candidates volunteer service
Renewal Information
- may be renewable, renewals are dependent on available funding as provided by the Cortland College Foundation
- continued funding is based on student maintaining a 3.0 cumulative grade point average
- matriculated at SUNY Cortland
- enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)
- maintain satisfactory academic progress per SUNY Cortland’s published Federal Good Academic Standing guidelines
- this scholarship is renewable for a maximum of three academic years (six academic semesters, excluding summer semesters). Actual number of terms is based on Class Level (freshman, sophomore, etc) at time of initial award
Scholarship funding is determined by the Cortland College Foundation. Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.
All applicants for this scholarship are also considered for Institute for Civic Engagement (non-monetary) Leadership in Civic Engagement Awards.

- Please provide a 250- to 300-word (maximum) description of your community-based civic engagement activities (community service, social action or social advocacy in the community) and the impact of those activities. Give specific dates and places.
- Reference Request (3) - You are required to provide letter(s) of recommendation for this scholarship application. Be sure to read the scholarship information regarding the required reference person qualifications (i.e. faculty, staff or other). Then carefully add the Name and Email Address of your first reference provider below (verify the email address prior to submitting). The person you list will receive an email from SUNY Cortland. The email will ask them to log into our system and complete the reference questionnaire, composed of four questions. *PLEASE contact your reference and make them aware they will receive an email request and which scholarship you are applying for.
