Thomas L. Goodale '61 and Sonja D. Goodale Community Service Scholarship

Established to honor the education Dr. Goodale received at SUNY Cortland and to affirm his respect for the work of the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department. The Department was founded in 1947 by Dr. Harlan G. Metcalf, who dedicated his life to his students and university, but especially to community service. Dr. Metcalf sought to instill in his students and colleagues a commitment to serve others, since to him there was no higher calling. Dr. Goodale, a student of Dr. Metcalf, made numerous contributions to the field of recreation and leisure studies throughout his career, as an educator, author, and speaker. As recognition of his significant accomplishments in the field, Dr. Goodale received the Distinguished Alumni award in 1986 and a S.U.N.Y. Honorary Degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, in 2008. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.

Selection Criteria

• awarded to a matriculated continuing sophomore, junior or senior level student or incoming transfer students in good academic standing at SUNY Cortland
• enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)
• is majoring in the area of recreation, parks and leisure studies
• has a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average
• has a demonstrated record of community service
• student must have at least one full academic year remaining at the start of the fall semester of award year

Preference

• is given to sophomore level students
• is given to students who have demonstrated financial need per FAFSA

Renewal Information

• This scholarship is a one-time award and is non-renewable. Students may apply each year.

Scholarship funding is determined by the Cortland College Foundation. Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.
