Stephanie and Marcus J. Martone '49 Scholarship
The Stephanie and Marcus J. Martone ’49 Scholarship was established by Marc to honor the education he received at SUNY Cortland, and his storied career as a physical educator, administrator and coach. He has been inducted into seven halls of fame, including the CClub Hall of Fame, Halls of Fame for the City of Glen Cove, Sewanhaka High School, Nassau County high school athletics, NYS Public high school athletic association, NYS athletic administrators association and Carey High School; while having the football field and Hall of Fame wing at Carey High School named in his honor. Known as a coaching legend, Martone appreciates the connection he had with his Cortland faculty and classmates, and he spent decades being a coach and mentor to all of his students. His wife, Stephanie, of 70 years, was the secretary for the girls physical education department at SUNY Cortland when Marc started college. Recipients of the scholarship will support SUNY Cortland students majoring in physical education with satisfactory academic achievement and a preference for graduates of any Long Island, NY high school. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.
Selection Criteria:
- For full-time matriculating student(s) enrolled in the physical education major.
- Recipients must be a sophomore, junior or senior.
- Recipient(s) must have satisfactory academic achievement.
- enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)
- student must have at least one full academic year remaining at the start of the fall semester of award year
*Preference: * - Graduates from any Long Island, NY high school.
- The scholarship is non-renewable. Students must apply each year.
