Karla J. Alwes, Ph.D., Scholarship

The Karla J. Alwes, Ph.D., Scholarship was established by Karla J. Alwes, Ph.D., Distinguished Teaching Professor Emerita of English. Alwes, who retired in 2022, was the recipient of a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and earned the coveted Rozanne Brooks Dedicated Teacher Award from SUNY Cortland. This scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled in majors in the Department of English with satisfactory academic achievement. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated financial need. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.

Selection Criteria

  • For full-time matriculating students enrolled in any major within the English Department.
  • Recipient(s) must be a sophomore, junior or senior level student.
  • Recipient(s) must have satisfactory academic achievement.
  • Recipient(s) must be enrolled full-time (at least twelve 12) credit hours each fall and spring semester).
  • Recipient(s) must have at least one full academic year remaining at the start of the fall semester of award year.

    Preference
  • Recipient(s) have demonstrated financial need per FAFSA.

    Renewal Information
  • This scholarship is a one-time award and is non-renewable. Students are eligible to apply each year.

Scholarship funding is determined by the Cortland College Foundation. Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.
