Suzanne Wingate Memorial Scholarship

The Suzanne Wingate Memorial Scholarship was established by the Sport Management Club in memory of Dr. Suzanne Wingate, a SUNY Cortland professor who was an avid golfer. The Sport Management Club held annual golf tournaments to raise money and eventually endow the scholarship. Dr. Wingate is credited with founding the College’s Sport Management program and worked at SUNY Cortland from 1985 until her death from cancer in 1995. Recipients must be seniors with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.3, demonstrate campus and community service and be enrolled as Majors in the Sport Management program. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.

Selection Criteria

  • For matriculating student(s) enrolled in the Sport Management major at SUNY Cortland.
  • Recipient(s) must have a minimum overall 3.3 grade point average.
  • Candidates must be of senior status (minimum of 90 credits) to apply.
  • Candidates must demonstrate involvement in the campus and community.
  • Candidates are required to submit a resume, cover letter and a minimum of two references, one of which shall be from someone outside the SPM department.
  • enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)

  • This scholarship is a one-time award and is non-renewable

Scholarship funding is determined by the Cortland College Foundation. Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.

  1. Are you planning to graduate with an undergraduate degree in sport management prior to the Fall 2027 term
  2. You are required to provide letter(s) of recommendation for this scholarship application. Be sure to read the scholarship information regarding the required reference person qualifications (i.e. faculty, staff or other). Then carefully add the Name and Email Address of your first reference provider below (verify the email address prior to submitting). The person you list will receive an email from SUNY Cortland. The email will ask them to log into our system and complete the reference questionnaire, composed of four questions. *PLEASE contact your reference and make them aware they will receive an email request and which scholarship you are applying for. If they do not receive a request in their regular email, have them to check their spam mailbox. *If you are applying for more than one scholarship that requires a reference and it makes sense to ask the same person to complete a recommendation on your behalf, please let them know they may receive multiple requests and will need to respond to each.
