Spanbauer Family Scholarship

The Spanbauer Family Scholarship was created to honor John J. and Patricia J. Spanbauer, beloved parents and grandparents. Established by Thomas Spanbauer ’83, M ’86, who served as SUNY Cortland’s head basketball coach (1995-2023), and his extended family members—Karen Leo, James Spanbauer ’86, John K. Spanbauer, Patricia Muller Spanbauer, Michael Spanbauer and Patricia J. Spanbauer ’03. It will be awarded to students in any education- related major with preference for those who have lost a parent or guardian and a secondary preference for those involved in civic engagement. Recipients must be sophomores, juniors or seniors and have satisfactory academic achievement. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.

Selection Criteria

  • For full-time matriculating student(s) enrolled in any education-related major.
  • Recipient(s) must be sophomores, juniors or seniors.
  • Recipient(s) must have satisfactory academic achievement.

Preference

  1. Applicant(s) who have lost a parent or guardian.
  2. Applicant(s) with demonstrated civic engagement.

Renewal Information

  • The scholarship is non-renewable. Students must apply each year.

Scholarship funding is determined by the Cortland College Foundation. Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.
