Harlan "Gold" Metcalf Award

Created in honor of Harlan “Gold” Metcalf who was the first chair of the Recreation Education Department (1947) and served in that capacity until 1969. Gold Metcalf was a man of many interests and of great energy. His primary love, aside from family, was the out-of-doors. Utilizing a warm and outgoing personality, he successfully taught outdoor skills to scores of students during his long tenure at Cortland. He was instrumental in securing the Raquette Lake property and he created the department’s Outdoor Education Practicum program. This award is given to a student majoring in Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies who exemplifies qualities of Harlan “Gold” Metcalf.

Selection criteria

  • For full-time matriculating undergraduate recreation, parks and leisure studies students.
  • Recipient(s) must be a senior level student.
  • Recipients(s) must have minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  • Recipients(s) must demonstrate scholarship, broad interests, integrity and dedication to serving people.
