Thomas L. Goodale '61 and Sonja D. Goodale Community Service Scholarship

The Thomas L. Goodale ’61 and Sonja D. Goodale Community Service Scholarship was created to honor the education Dr. Goodale received at SUNY Cortland and to affirm his respect for the work of the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department. The department was founded in 1947 by Dr. Harlan G. Metcalf, who dedicated his life to his students and university, but especially to community service. Dr. Metcalf sought to instill in his students and colleagues a commitment to serving others, since to him there was no higher calling. Dr. Goodale, a student of Dr. Metcalf, made numerous contributions to the field of recreation and leisure studies throughout his career, as an educator, author and speaker. In recognition of his significant accomplishments in the field, Dr. Goodale received the Distinguished Alumni award in 1986 and a SUNY Honorary Degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, in 2008. This scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled in any major within the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department with satisfactory academic achievement and a commitment to community service. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated financial need. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.

Selection Criteria

• For full-time matriculating students enrolled in a major within Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department
• Recipient(s) must have satisfactory academic achievement
• enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)
• Recipient(s) has a demonstrated record of community service

Preference

• is given to students who have demonstrated financial need per FAFSA

Renewal Information

• This scholarship is a one-time award and is non-renewable. Students may apply each year.

Scholarship funding is determined by the Cortland College Foundation. Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.
