Joseph Brownell Geography Scholarship

The Joseph Brownell Geography Scholarship was established by the children of Joseph Brownell, Emeritus Professor of Geography. Dr. Brownell was a valued historian, researcher and author who taught geography at SUNY Cortland for more than a half-century. Award will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Funding is based on availability.

Selection Criteria

  • Recipient must be a matriculated Junior or Senior level student in good academic standing at SUNY Cortland.
  • Recipient must be full-time matriculating students enrolled in any major under the Geography Department.
  • Recipient must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester)
  • Recipient must have at least one full academic year remaining at the start of the fall semester of award year
  • Scholarship amount will be approximately $2,000 for one student and will be directed to offset the cost of attendance for one year. If the endowment grows, the scholarship will be given to one student at the higher amount up to $4,000. Then future additional awards can begin to be made at a minimum of $2,000.

Preference

  • Preference given to students with demonstrated financial need per FAFSA.

Renewability

  • The scholarship is non-renewable. It is awarded for one year and students are eligible to apply each year.

Scholarship funding is determined by the Cortland College Foundation. Scholarship amounts and availability are subject to change.
